Basinet Shopping Guide
In the first few months of parenthood, many parents wonder whether it’s best to use a crib or a bassinet. Up until about age four months, either can actually be used; however, if you do choose to use a bassinet, there are a few things you should know in order to make sure you acquire safest product possible for your baby.
First, when making the decision between a crib and a bassinet, understand that there are a number of advantages related to having your little one sleep in a bassinet that a crib simply cannot provide. For example, parents who want their babies to sleep close to them, but not necessarily in the same bed, prefer the convenience and comfort that a bassinet can provide. Because of the fact that a bassinet is so lightweight it can be easily moved around the home and will fit comfortably and easily next to a full size bed. This makes it quite convenient for night-time feedings. Many manufacturers also produce bassinets that are specifically geared for this purpose; known as co-sleepers. These bassinets have a side that lowers; making it very easy for parents to pull the bassinet up to the side of their bed. Basinets are also incredibly portable, making it easier for parents who need to travel frequently.
When considering between a standard crib and a bassinet, it’s important to understand that bassinets have a limited time in which they can be safely used. Most manufacturers recommend that bassinets not be used longer than age six months; depending on the size of your baby. Babies that grow particularly fast and are able to pull themselves up at earlier ages may need to be moved to as standard crib at an earlier age.
After making the decision to purchase a basinet, make sure that any product you consider is solidly built and contains a wide base to prevent it from accidentally tipping over. If the bassinet contains any slats at all, they should not be spaced any farther apart than 2 3/8 inches. This is an extremely important point, as it will prevent the child from getting caught between the slats. Many bassinet models will contain locks or latches, particularly if it is a folding unit. If the model that you consider has such latches or locks, make sure that they are well made and lock securely.
Beyond the construction of the basinet, it’s also important to insure that the mattress is made of quality construction. The mattress of a baby bed should always be firm and never soft. It should fit tightly inside the basinet, with no additional room. To be completely safe, you should not be able to fit more than two fingers between the side of the bassinet and the mattress. If the bassinet has a gap that is any wider than this, the bassinet may present a safety issue and possibly cause suffocation.
Bassinets also frequently come with a variety of features today and you’ll need to decide whether you want to invest in these features for the limited amount of time that the product will be in use. Some models today will actually vibrate to comfort the child and help him/her fall asleep faster. Other models feature a built in mobile that plays music, similar to the larger models that fit on a standard crib. If you opt for any of these features, make sure that you fully inspect them to be sure that all parts are securely installed.
